Icons – An Exhibition about the Right to Exist presents portraits of famous icons and archetypes, where everyone can find someone or something to relate to. These are images of universal dreams and desires of being part of popular culture, art or society. Here, however, the icons are a group of people who rarely or never take centre stage even though they have always been among us. Coming from all over Sweden, the 21 models have one thing in common: dreams, emotions, and Down syndrome. This exhibition is about something greater than photography. It is about being allowed to exist, allowed to take your place, whoever you are. We all need an icon or a model to relate to. The dreams re-enacted by the 21 models are common to us all, because haven’t we all, sometime, dreamed of being the Queen, a police officer, an actor or a mother?
Icons is Fotografiska’s largest ever project and a collaboration with the Glada Hudik Theatre, photographer Emma Svensson and costume makers Linda Sandberg and Helena Andersson. It is also an exhibition about difficulties and challenges. Emmy-nominated photographer and documentary filmmaker Pieter ten Hoopen has been commissioned by Fotografiska and Aftonbladet TV to create the film you can enjoy in the adjacent gallery, telling the story of some of the models and their parents. It is about what happens when the doctor breaks the news that something is different. It is about difficulties and preconceptions, but also about a new life and unconditional love. Visibility leads to the understanding of differences. With all our qualities and deficiencies, we can contribute to enrich society. And to some extent we are all divergent or different; because we are all unique but more alike than we may think.
