Embrace your Empathy

On 15.8 the platform Ekoluoto is placed in the spotlight when Terike Haapoja and Laura Gustafsson's purple-and-white flags appear to encourage thoughts on multispecies cohabitation.

Gustafsson & Haapoja's flag installation is based on existing state and national flags, which symbols have been partially altered to make room for locally important animals. The installation proposes a re-division of power between various forms of life. It is part of the WAMx exhibition programme and consists of flags, a video piece and a manifesto.

The installation displayed in Turku presents the flags in a new way. The works of Haapoja and Gustafsson sharply analyse the current habit of definitive separation and borders because instead of looking for differences it would be important to find ways to connect and cherish empathy. Instead of celebrating flag days, each day could celebrate the equality of all species.
