Since her debut exhibition in 1967, painter Terttu Jurvakainen (1939–) has walked the milky way of colours and soared – as she writes in one of her poems. Winning the national J. H. Erkko poetry competition in 1968 has resulted in twelve collections of poems, two novels and one picture book. A Shining Palette celebrates Jurvakainen's career of 51 years as a painter and her four decades as the gallerist of the stylish art gallery bearing her name in the commune of Muhos near Oulu and as the curator of its summertime exhibitions.
The extensive retrospective exhibition showcases the milestones of Jurvakainen's output from the 1980s to the present day. The decades have accommodated different stylistic periods, but expressive use of colour and sensuous juxtaposition have always played a key role in her massive abstract paintings. The non-figurative paintings are accompanied by her beloved flower compositions and female figures that can, to an extent, be interpreted as autobiographical: little by little / the face in the painting / becomes mine. The exhibition also features a video interview of the artist.
