Information on the museum field

According to the Finnish Museums Association database, there are over a thousand museums in Finland, of which 154 are professionally run. Professional museum organisations run a total of 322 museum sites. Most Finnish museums are small local or district museums, open mainly during the summer.

The government body responsible for museums and cultural heritage issues is the Arts and Cultural Heritage Division of the Ministry of Education and Culture. In addition to the Ministry of Education, certain other ministries manage their own museums (Ministry of Defence/ Military Museum, Ministry of Transport and Communications/ specialist transport museums). Some issues concerning cultivated environments fall under the Ministry of the Environment together with the National Board of Antiquities.
