Types of museums

There are over 1000 museums in Finland. One third of all the museums are professionally run. The many local museums are a sign of the citizens' activity.

Art museums

There are 16 regional art museums in Finland. In addition to research, documenting and exhibition work, their task is to promote and guide art museum activities in their respective regions.

Museums of cultural history

There are 22 regional museums of cultural history in Finland. In addition to research, documenting and exhibition work, their task is to promote and guide museum activities in their respective regions. These regional museums also perform certain designated administrative duties concerning the export of cultural items and the preservation of buildings and antiquities.

Museums of natural science

The national museum for natural history museums is the Finnish Museum of Natural History. It is an independent research institution functioning under the University of Helsinki. The collections, which include botanical, zoological, geological and paleontological specimens from all over the world, serve research in the fields of Biology and Geology as well as educational purposes.

Specialized museums

There are 17 national specialist museums in Finland. Their task is to promote and guide museum activities and coordinate museum cooperation in their respective fields. They also do research, documenting and exhibition work within their field.
